Mommy and Baby Matching Headbands Review and Giveaway

I got an Instagram comment one day that said, 'My friend runs a small headband business and I wonder if you'd want to do a giveaway on your blog for her stuff?' I went to the shop's account and said, 'Yes, please!' because having a matching headband with my girl is RIGHT up my alley. And plus, I really need to wear headbands other than my 'sporty' Lulu ones....just for days when I pretend to be dressed up and not always in athletic gear;) Cecelia is certainly not hurting in the hair decoration department but she one can never have too many options for little girls, right?

Danielle from Pieces to Peaces Boutique emailed me after her friend connected us through Instagram. I told her I'd love to try one of her mommy and me sets of peace bands in any color/print. She sent me gray chevron ones so maybe she knows me better than I thought;)

I am dying over how adorable Cecelia looks in her new band. With her wild hair sticking out everywhere I think she pulls off the wider fabric really well. And I keep playing with where I want to put the little gathered seam. And yes, a popsicle was totally necessary to keep her entertained.

My band is super comfortable and 'dressier' than my athletic headbands, for sure. I think I like my gathered seam right in the middle of my head, but I also tried putting it in the back, under my pony tail, too. I also want to wear this with my hair down---but that will require a blowdryer and flat iron, so it might not happen for a bit. Loving how easy it is to throw this on and look somewhat put together even when I'm straight of the shower with a wet ponytail.

Also, matching my daughter is fun. Also, I need to learn to sew asap because I want a lot of other products from Danielle.

So now it's time for you to get a pair of your own 'peace bands', my dear readers.

Comment in this post to enter from now until Wednesday night, June 12. Then on Thursday morning, June 13 I will randomly select a comment as the winner in a different post. You don't have to say anything special in your comment, or you can tell us your favorite product on the Pieces to Peaces FB page (she is working on her Etsy page, too). Go crazy;)

Best of luck!!

Let Downs and Pick Me Ups

Sometimes life can be so unfair.
Last week, we had a fantastic plan. We have been looking to buy land in the beautiful Texas hill country, and as I mentioned previously, we had been searching for a long time! I happened upon a property that seemed to have potential, so I drove an hour North with the kids on Tuesday to check it out. Immediately, I fell in love with that gorgeous piece of land. It was 12 acres of near perfection, almost everything we had wanted in a land purchase! (It was a bit more expensive than we had hoped but still within reach.) Driving home on Tuesday afternoon, I was so excited for Johnny to view the property too. Obviously, he wouldn't be able to come see it until Saturday, because he works during the daytime,
but we planned it all out with the Realtor. We had our appointment set for Saturday, and we were encouraged to have our our financial papers ready to go by that time. Everything worked out financially, and on Friday morning I called our Realtor to let her know that we were ready for action on Saturday.

She called me back an hour later.
With bad news.
Someone else made an offer Friday morning, and the owner had accepted their offer.
We were a few hours too late.

At first I was sad, and then I was frustrated, and then I was melancholy. Why did this happen? We had done everything right! Things should have worked out! I felt like grieving a loss that had really only been a part of my life for 4 days,
yet it really, really hurt that our hopes were shattered so quickly.

Luckily, I have a wonderful mother. I called her in tears after I got the news, and she wisely gave me advice that ceased my tears. She reminded me that if God absolutely wanted us in that exact spot, then we would be there. If we were meant to own that 12 acres, this other offer would fall through. But if not, then God had other plans, and we needed to trust Him.
"I know Mom, but it still hurts," I responded.
To which she said, "Go pray. He is the one who can comfort your heart and give you peace about what you need to do."

Oh, how I love my momma! She listened to me, she empathized with me, and she reminded me that eventually everything would work out to our family's benefit. This property had seemed perfect, but we would find something else. I followed my mom's advice and took some time to pray. The next morning, I had another prayerful conversation in which I explained all my feelings to God about our goals, hopes, and dreams. Finally, after opening my wounded heart to Him, I felt some peace.

Saturday morning, I felt like we should drive to that small town anyways. My heart was calm, but I wanted to show Johnny that property and that town anyways. I figured that together we could decide if we really wanted to buy land in that part of Texas. Johnny agreed, so we loaded up the kids and made the hour drive North. Yea for family road trips!

And you know what? We stumbled across another beautiful piece of land, just a mile up the road from that first piece of property. This second property was a little bit smaller, only 10 acres, but it was considerably less expensive. This second property also had big beautiful trees and pastures. Additionally, it had a small creek. Exploring this second property was exciting, and Johnny and I both wondered if it was meant for us.
Maybe this was the land we needed to find?
As we talked and talked and talked over the weekend, it seemed as if this second property better suited all our goals. We wondered if this was an answer to our prayers for comfort and direction. This one felt right.
Tomorrow we are calling the Realtor to make an offer.
Hopefully it works out in our favor (and someone didn't snatch it up in the last 24 hours). "But if not," then I know that God is watching over me and my family. He will help us reach our goals, and as long as we trust Him and follow His directions, we will find that fulfillment and joy we are seeking.

Stressed Out Slow Down and Play

Today's message is simple:
When you feel stressed out, slow down and play.

Have you noticed that kids love to play? Even if they fall and hurt themselves, they jump back up and continue to play. Play is the natural language of children, which I've also discussed here.
Adults are amazing multitaskers, especially women. So when life gets out of hand and your daily schedule seems too rushed, what would happen if you just slowed down?

What if you took just five minutes and simply played?

Read that book to your toddler who has been following you around, asking for a story.
Build a tower of blocks and knock it down with your son. Take the kids for a walk around the neighborhood to get some energy (or frustration) out. Draw those scribbles and pictures.
If you don't have little ones at home, slow down and play the adult way. For me, that would be eating a sugary snack, taking a nap, or doing some window shopping. Just do something you enjoy for a few minutes, and then return to your daily tasks. Go play!

Stress is fleeting, but memories last for years.
Try to enjoy those moments at home with the kids or your spouse or your friends or yourself now.
You'll feel more peace, your heart rate will slow down, and your mood will improve if you take time to play.
The dishes can wait for half an hour.

That Time Luke Smeared Poop All Over His Crib And Ate It

So. Yeah.
I had a rookie mothering moment earlier this week.
The problem is I am not a rookie mom.
This ain't my first rodeo. It's my third.
But, it's my first time as a "boy mom" and by golly, I sure got initiated into the Boy Mom Club this week.

Let me set the scene...but first a little background info.
Every morning when Luke wakes up, he happily plays in his crib with his toys for at least 30 minutes.
He never cries, just talks to himself and plays.

It's summer, so I will gladly stay in bed a little bit longer.
Also, because it's summer and hot out, many times I won't put pj's on Luke, and he will just sleep/nap in his diaper. No big deal. We have a 2 story house, so our upstairs can get pretty warm.

It's Monday morning around 8 am. Luke was happily playing in his crib and the girls get up for the morning. I go into Luke's room to bring him downstairs and get breakfast started.

What I saw (and smelt) when I walked into his room was POOP.

POOP EVERYWHERE.

Luke. COVERED IN POOP.
All over his body. He was naked. (It was hot that night, he just slept in a diaper)
Where was the diaper? It was off. It was EMPTY. No Poop left in the diaper.
The poo was everywhere.
My beautiful baby boy looked like he had taken a mud bath. But it was poop.
Smeared all over his body. On his face. In his hair. Clumps of poop in his hands.
Ohmygosh.Groosssss.
His crib. COVERED IN POOP.
Poop on the sheet. Poop on his bumper. Poop on the crib slats. Poop on the wall.
To Luke, the poop was merley finger paint and he was the artist.
He was smiling & laughing, happily sucking on his pacifier....
His pacifier....in his mouth...WAS COVERED IN POOP.

 Then I really panicked.

I grabbed the pacifer out of his mouth. (And, gagged)
Ran to the bathroom & got a washcloth to wipe out his mouth.
I am not sure how much poop he actually got in his mouth....he was playing in his crib for a while.
But, he definitely had some in his mouth.
I washed out his mouth & then got in the shower with him.
Poop all over both of us. I cleaned us both up, got him dressed and then had the girls watch him while I went back to his room to clean up the rest of the mess.
And, a mess it was. Poop covered toys went in the trash.
His crib bedding & bumper when into the wash.
I used almost a whole container of Lysol wipes on his crib and the wall by his crib.
Who knew an 11 month old's poopy diaper could make that big of a mess?!?!
You are lucky this is the photo I am showing. I have ones that are much, much, much worse.
I will spare you. You're Welcome ;)

As I was cleaning, I started panicking about the fact that Luke for sure got poop in his mouth.
After I cleaned up, I went straight to the doctor. And by doctor, I mean google.

Things I googled that morning:
"My baby ate poop"
"Can a baby die from eating his own poop?"
"Sicknesses from my baby eating his own poop"
"Is baby poop poisonous?"

Never thought I would google those phrases.
And, it''s comforting that other people have asked the same things.
Luke isn't the only baby who has eaten poop.

The good news is that it has been 48 hours and Luke seems fine.
He hasn't shown any signs of poop poisoning. Ha!
I think it's safe to say that his is fine.
I am the one that is scared from the morning's events.

So, what is the moral of this story?
1. Always put pajamas on your baby, even if it's just a onesie. If it's hot & in the summer, at least put on a onesie....less chance of them taking their diaper off & smearing poop everywhere if they have to get the onesie off first.
2. Get a video monitor so I can see what Luke is doing when he "plays" in his crib each morning.
3. Get out of bed when you hear that your baby is awake in the morning. Even if he is "playing" and happy in the crib, the few extra minutes of sleep aren't worth it. Cleaning up poop is no fun. Neither is eating poop.

Monday morning will always be remembered as Poop-a-poolza 2013.
I hope to never experience that again.
Motherhood. It humbles you. That's for sure.

The deets the reveal and ultrasound

The Ultrasound itself:

Oh yes, there was an actual ultrasound that went along with our fun gender reveal, too. It was on Thursday afternoon and we dropped Truman off at Lori's for the scan that day. I drank the recommended amount of water (freaking 24 ounces) but instead of slamming it in 30 minutes I was a rebel and took 45 minutes. I am so wild this second time around. Still had to pee like a mad woman but not the point of tears, like I was with Truman's scan. The tech asked us right away if we wanted to know the sex, and we said yes but we wanted him to write it down and not actually tell or show us during the scan. He asked us to turn our head within the first 5 minutes of the 45 minute scan and we had to do that a few more times throughout. Do you know how difficult this was for two Type A planners?? But the tech said he knew the sex, printed out the ultrasound picture with the sex on it, and placed it in my little envelope right away. He gave us a 99% chance of being correct, and with Truman he'd given us a 99.9% chance. This made Nate assume that this baby must also be a boy, because if it was a girl the tech might not have been so sure. But I left that ultrasound thinking this was all girl because I could have sworn the tech said 'she' once after he'd seen the private parts. So both Nate and I left that room feeling 'sure' that we knew the sex, and we both had different guesses.

Of course, there was a lot more to this ultrasound than just getting the money shot: a heart with four chambers, heart rate of 158, a 'beautifully perfect' cerebellum without any extra fluid on the brain or extra nuchal fold at the neck to indicate Down Syndrome, a straight spine, good kidneys, bladder, lungs, an umbilical cord that is appropriately placed, a good placenta and cervix. I cannot tell you how relieved I feel after this scan, although I still wanted to hear that official 'everything is normal' statement from my OB's office. I got that call on Monday and let out an audible sigh. As Nate says, I can't ever just relax and be 100% happy, always have to worry about something:)

Baby girl was a little stubborn with her positioning, just like her big brother was. The tech said that only one out of ever 20-30 babies give him a hard time with getting the right measurements and both of my kids (!!) made him earn his money. Both times the tech thought I would need to return for a second scan but the babes turned at the last minute and give him what he needs. This child was moving around just fine but definitely preferred to be balled up, just chilling in the fetal position. So.In.Love.

Here is my reveal post with Truman. He was in the 58th percentile for growth, and 13 ounces. This baby is in the 70th percentile for growth, and 14 ounces. I think it's astonishing how different these two kiddos look already, but I know these scans aren't exactly high-def.

compare

Before the Big Reveal:

I couldn't sleep the night before this big reveal. I was wide awake from 2:30 am until 5:30 am just dreaming about what was going to be in that box (plus thinking about switching Truman to a big boy bed, and whether or not we would get this house we want so badly). In my heart I really thought this baby was a girl, but I never had that true 'gut feeling' until after the ultrasound. And on our drive out to the photoshoot the next day, I was counseling myself to not feel disappointed if blue balloons flew out of the box. Obviously, another boy would be amazing because it's what we know, and Truman would probably love a little brother 2 years his junior. But for some reason, I started to get really attached to the idea of a little girl this time----one of each in our little family. Frills and pinks and a mother-daughter relationship that would surely make my life seem even more fulfilled. I tried to stay focused on the bottom line: that any healthy baby would be whole-heartedly welcomed and loved, no matter what color of balloons we'd see.

The details of the shoot:

Way back in June or July, I found this pin on Pinterest--yes, before I was even pregnant this time. I just knew that if and when I got my chance again, I wanted to do this gender reveal with balloons in a box. Once I was pregnant again, I remember sending the link to my friend Erin, asking her if she wanted to help out with the logistics of the shoot. She happily accepted and proceeded to be even more excited about it all than I was, if that is even possible. I asked my friend Dizzy to help with the shoot as well, and she shot the video for us. After showing Andrea the link to this idea, she jumped at the chance to be our official photographer. We were all set, and then the emails started flying.

I decided to give Erin the golden envelope that contained the 'money shot' ultrasound picture right away---literally, as soon as we drove back from the scan, I met Erin at Lori's (since we were both picking up our boys at that time anyway) and forked it over. Talk about having something burn a hole into your pocket---I am still proud of myself for not even peeking a tiny bit. I also gave her the box that I had decorated and some cash for the balloons. Erin then looked at the envelope that night, and ordered 15 helium balloons in the appropriate color to have ready for Saturday morning. She also told Andrea the big news with my permission, so the two of them were a part of some secret society and were about to pop with excitement. Dizzy chose to stay in the dark about the color of balloons because she is way more zen than the rest of us, and isn't even finding out what she is having, but was still really excited for me to find out 'early.' I didn't feel weird or jealous that they knew before me, just really happy that I have friends who care so much about this type of thing and love me despite/along with my desire to be a little dramatic. I won't get all mushy on you here, but these three girlfriends of mine have seen me through some really dark moments in the past year and I don't know if I could be as nearly-sane as I am right now without them. End of girlie-mush.

Nate, Truman, and I arrived at this little bike trail that Andrea had picked out for the shoot on Saturday morning. The three girls had already gotten there to set up shop with the box and 'spare' balloons for a little 'what will it be?' shoot before hand. And then, the magic happened. :) The only thing I would have done differently would have been to use a bigger box. I really wanted 15 balloons to fly out but only 6 could fit into my tiny box I made. What can I say, I don't estimate size too well. But if I picked a larger box then it would have been harder to fit in Erin's car and Truman would have been much shorter than it during the reveal, so whatever---I guess 3 balloons flying out, then 3 more after that is just fine.

I can honestly say that this reveal was full of so much anticipation, an extra 2 days of waiting (which, for a couple that has NO desire to wait the full pregnancy to find out the sex, that was a long time!!), and such wonderful support from my friends that it sort of felt like a dream. I was nervous, yes, but also just so darn happy to know what we were having that it didn't even seem real.

Here is a little video I made so we could show our parents and friends/family how awesome the reveal was in real time, and I actually re-did it to add a few of Andrea's pictures into the mix after I received those. I had to use the song A Thousand Years by Christina Perri because I heard it right in the beginning of this pregnancy, when everything was incredibly uncertain, and I immediately started balling hearing these lyrics. I wanted so badly for this little baby to stick around for the ride but at the time it just seemed like a far off dream. And now we are over halfway done with this pregnancy and we have a healthy baby girl to meet in a few more months. This was such a special day and I get chills watching this video every time (maybe a little teary, too). Perhaps you are with me on that one.

When those pink balloons popped out, all I could think was,' Yes! Thank you, God.' And then, 'Truman is getting a sister!' A few tears were shed, but not as many as I had anticipated because I think I was just in such shock, it didn't even hit me for a few hours. I called my parents and Memaw, and we did a mini-reveal with left over pink balloons in the box for Nate's parents when we got home. I know that this sort of big production for a gender reveal isn't something that everyone wants to do, but I can definitely say it was one of the most amazing experiences we've had. It was absolutely worth the wait of those dreaded two days between the ultrasound and reveal.

Pink balloons. Sigh.

Goals and Money Saving Tips for the New Year

One year over, and a new year just beginning. Hello 2017!

With the start of a new year, people think about goals and fresh starts. I don't have new goals per se, but I do want to complete leftover goals from last year. Life is a work in progress, and I hope I am continually improving as I go. Since January has finally arrived, I can nudge myself to lose the last remaining pounds of baby weight and stop eating so much holiday food (once my stocking candy is finally eaten and gone. . .) I'm also excited to get back to the gym now that my baby is old enough for childcare programs while I exercise at the gym.

Weight goals are super common in January, but don't forget about financial goals too! Last month, I was introduced to the company Earnest, and they got me thinking about financial saving and security. Their company mission is to not only save money but to also teach the importance of knowing where your money is, how you spend it, and what your debt looks like. Adults old and young can benefit from a financial check-up to make sure you're on a sustainable path. Plus, if you are a recent graduate, take comfort in knowing that you can refinance student loans with Earnest and save over $20k!

I personalized my Money Saving Challenge plan with Earnest, which I'll share below.
I often tell my clients to tape their goal chart to a mirror or dresser, somewhere highly visible. Frequently seeing your goals helps channel your thoughts in that direction, making it easier to change unwanted habits. This first quarter, my goal is to keep healthy snacks in my purse and on my kitchen counter. The more I eat healthy, the more my body will crave healthy, right? These last 10 pounds of baby weight have gotta go! The same principle applies to financial goals. Once saving money becomes a habit, it's easier to save. Learning to curb spending desires is similar to curbing junk food cravings - it takes time and effort. You can even tape a picture of the "treat" you are saving for to your own mirror.

What goals would be on your three month list?
What actions can you take to form healthier financial habits?
Let me know in the comment section. Good luck!

Anniversary and Mothers Day

We had a great Mother's Day Weekend!  We kicked off the weekend celebrating our anniversary!  Bradley and I got all dressed up to meet Daddy for dinner.

It is so fun bringing him out places now!  We just have to make sure we have lots of puffs and toys!

Then we went to the lake to meet up with my parents!  We always dress very patriotic for the lake.

 So happy to see Papa!

Also happy to get some breakfast!

The boat hasn't been delivered yet but we enjoyed being outside regardless.  The little girls did, too.

Every time we get to the lake, Papa has a new toy for Bradley!  This weekend this little table appeared, and Bradley was obsessed.

We always eat well at the lake - how delicious and adorable is this sugar cookie bar?!

Then it was time to swim! :)

Bradley loves baths and his swim lessons, so he definitely loved splashing around in the kiddie pool!

And how great is this mom suit??  (from Albion Fit).

Bradley wanted my beverage!  Or maybe just the flamingo.

We gave him his favorite teether instead.

Bradley does NOT love wearing sunglasses. :)

I got them on...

He grabbed the side...

...and off they came!

Dad got them on him when they were lounging. :)

A safer spot for my beverages. :)

Bradley loves hanging with Papa.

My parents recently added on to the lake house for all of the grandkids!  How cute is this bunk room?
